Part 2: What Lies Beneath
For this section, you will be reading and responding to the essays in Part II of A Republic of Rivers, (essays 13-29).
You will also read poems from parts IV-VI in John Haines’s collection of poems, The Owl in the Mask of the Dreamer. See either the Calendar of Assignments or the individual weekly pages below for more details.
In this section we will be talking about what lies beneath or behind the landscape that the writers are trying to understand. What is on the surface of each writer’s understanding becomes more complicated and often changes shape completely when the writers begin to dig deeper. Masks are an important part of Alaska Native ceremonies and traditions. Often the masks will depict a literal landscape within them. Keep this in mind as you begin reading.
